Elementary School:

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journey(Common Core)

The Elementary school spans across Grade (1) through Grade (5). At AGBS, the Elementary school provides a safe, challenging, and nurturing learning environment for students. Each student’s potential is highly recognized and nurtured.

Students are provided opportunities to demonstrate their many talents, communication skills, and leadership qualities through curricular and co-curricular activities. Teachers encourage and assist students in becoming active learners, integrating their ideas, feelings and experiences into the instructional program. They are encouraged to accept responsibility for their conduct, thereby enhancing their instinct and love for learning.

The Curriculum for students in grades 1 through 5 emphasizes basic skills in all subject areas and introduces higher level skills to challenge students and stimulate their interests. It fostersthe concept that learning will be enjoyable and rewarding throughout the students' lives. A continuous progress approach is used in the core curricular areas of reading, writing, mathematics, and science. In addition to the core subjects, students receive instruction in Physical Education, Art, Arabic language for native and non-native speakers, and Islamic education for Muslims, Library Science, and Instructional Technology. The key components of our balanced program include instruction in the following areas: phonological awareness, phonics/decoding, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. This structure provides us with a road map for helping all students reach beyond the standards.
